Uncovering The Deeps

Job 12:22 -[The Lord] uncovers the deeps out of darkness and brings deep darkness to light. (ESV)

“Uncovers” is the Hebrew word gala מְגַלֶּ֣ה.In. In the book of Job, gala expresses the idea of revealing or uncovering a secret or mystery by making it discoverable. This can be to expose sin or even the crooked ways of man so that they can be clearly seen, no longer done in secret or under the cover of deep darkness. The Lord takes a place that may be unsearchable by man and fully discloses it, putting it on full display in the Light of His Presence.

At the same time, as we walk in the Light of God’s Presence, He also makes clear the image of His Son Who now abides within us. As we walk in the light of His Word, He uncovers and brings into a clearer view what was once obscured from our understanding, but now by the Presence of His Spirit within us, He enables us to walk in a victorious faith that is securely founded upon our Lord, Jesus Christ..

Acts 27:13-44 gives us a great word picture for this Hebrew word recorded in verse 39. With the sailors and travelers in the middle of a terrific storm, and after they had tried to save themselves and the ship, the verse says, “Now when it was day, they did not recognize the land, but they noticed a bay with a beach on which they planned, if possible, to run the ship ashore.”

At first they did not recognize the island. Whether it was obscured in the storm or they were disoriented or because of the direction from which they were approaching the island, they found themselves in the shadow of death in the midst of a Nor-Easter while at sea.

Yet, while still in the midst of the storm, God uncovered a bay with a beach where they could run ashore and where all who were on board the ship would be saved. The Lord used their moments of doubt and lack of success in their own attempts to save themselves in order to produce a willingness to receive counsel that they once rejected from Paul, their prisoner but God’s man. All began to come into a clear light regarding the actions they needed to take to be saved.

Encouraged by this Hebrew word, may our hearts be to walk in the light, as He is in the light, that we have fellowship with one another, and that the blood of Jesus, God’s Son, cleanses us from all sin. Confessing our known sins, we know that He will be faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 Jn. 1:5-7). For it is in His Light that all that is obscure is uncovered and becomes clear for it is He Who will direct our steps if we seek His counsel.
