His Name

Part 1

Isaiah 9:6b – “And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (NKJV)

A name speaks of all that is true about a person. Name in the Hebrew is shem, and it speaks of the identity of that person’s character and nature. Consider how the truths of the names in Isaiah 9:6 affect our times of prayer.

Wonderful (pele in the Hebrew) carries the idea of the healing heart of God as the miracle worker. As we pray, we are praying in the Name of the One Who bears the healing heart of God.

The name Counselor (Yo’es or ya’ats) speaks of the Advisor or Purpose Giver. It carries the idea of submitting or humbling oneself to the sovereign will and purposes of God.

The name Mighty God (El gibbor) carries the idea of the One Who is in control or in command. It is a military word for a mighty warrior, a hero in battle. It speaks of a commander who obtained his leadership position by challenging the prior leader to a fight and thoroughly defeating him. We have the privilege to pray in the Name of the One who defeated all other so-called gods, including the god of this world, to defeat any adversary that opposes us or others as we pray on their behalf.

Just think, when we pray, we are communing with the Healer, the Miracle Worker, the Great Advisor, the Purpose Giver, the Mighty Warrior, our Hero in battle!
